Halloween Candy
Candy is really cheap in the days following Halloween. Pick up some chocolate for your baking projects or for stocking stuffers. Just store the candy in the freezer until you need it.
Uneven Cake Layers
Sometimes you bake a cake layer that comes out just a little bit lopsided. Level the layer with a serrated knife. Then apply a coat of frosting to the rough edge leftover from the cut. Let the frosting dry before frosting the rest of the cake.
Cake and Cookie Rack Placement
Cakes and cookies bake more evenly in the center of your oven. If you are baking more than one item, try to place them as close to the center of the oven as possible but leave about an inch between them.
Preheat Your Oven
Always preheat your oven before baking. Oven temperature is very important for successful baking. Purchase an oven themometer to verify the temperature in your oven. If pans are too close together you won't get proper heat circulation.
A Good Time to Buy Pumpkins
Right after Halloween is a good time to buy pumpkins at discount prices. Pumpkin can be used in a variety of tasty recipes for soups, cookies, or pies. The seeds can be roasted to make a tasty snack.
Buy Bulk Nuts for Baking
If you are planning on baking be sure to buy bulk nuts. You can store any that you don't use in the freezer and you will save a lot of money. In fact, most baking ingredients can be bought in bulk at significant savings and be stored long term either in dry storage or the freezer.
Chill Your Cake Layers
Put your cake layers in the freezer for an hour or two before frosting them. They will firm up and won't crack and crumble when you apply the frosting.
